Brushes met paper with gentle strokes of watercolor as conversations on culture and community filled the room. Gathering UST Fine Arts students, BUeños, organizers, and partner organizations, the event became more than a simple showcase of talent — it became a dialogue on the power of art to shape identity and preserve heritage.

The Albay Arts Foundation (AAF), which was founded in 2022, is at the forefront of this movement. Rome Candanza says that the foundation started as a group of writers, geologists, artists, doctors, and cultural workers who all wanted to promote art that was based on Albay's history. What began as a small project has grown into a network of 83 members who are dedicated to bringing Bicolano artists from different fields together.

Mr. Candanza stressed how important it is to support art not only as a form of beauty but also as a cultural duty. AAF continues to showcase exhibits, artist talks, and film screenings in schools and theaters with the help of groups like the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and ARTISTA. Many of these events are free, to make sure any individual who wishes to participate can go.

The Pundasyon Gallery, located along Legazpi Boulevard, is one of their noteworthy creative spaces. It features artwork that reflects both traditional and modern Bicol narratives. In addition to galleries and museums, AAF directly engages communities, fostering relationships and promoting grassroots cultural engagement.

AAF is adamant that youth should have more access to creative spaces and workshops. Mr. Candanza highlighted the increasing distraction that deters young people from pursuing artistic endeavors in a time when social media is king. The foundation aims to refocus attention on meaningful creation and cultural appreciation by providing alternatives to screen-centered engagement.

As AAF moves forward with Lakaw, Kurit, Rumdom, it carries with it a deeper purpose — to transform art into a linangan, a living space of learning, heritage, and shared identity. For in cultivating culture, they are not merely creating works of art; they are shaping a legacy for generations to come.

The Bicol University - Movement for the Advancement of Youth-led Advocacies (BU MADYA) shares the same advocacies and goals. The organization partnered with AAF. Several member-advocates and officers joined the events and served the people as volunteers and facilitators for the 2-day event.
